Operation Christmas Child

The small van was in action recently to help deliver shoe boxes from Nantwich people to Operation Christmas Child.

Operation Christmas Child is the world's largest children's Christmas project, run by the Christian charity Samaritan's Purse. They have been sending gift-filled shoe boxes around the world since 1990, bringing joy into the lives of over 80 million underprivileged children.

Student Movers were proud to be able to donate the use of a vehicle for a day to help deliver over 300 gift filled boxes.

Summer 2011 Performance On Target

With August now fast approaching it’s finale and the Student Movers Team beginning to look a little ragged It is very nearly time to slow down a little and reflect on our summer performance. The only obstacle between that and where we are now is September, and what a September it is going to be!

We have today joined the affiliate program at Boxes2move.co.uk. After being approached by them only yesterday. Many of you will know that recently we have been unable to provide boxes due to problems with our previous supplier. This is great news as we can now, once again, offer box supplies to all our customers through our website.

May Targets Smashed at Mid Point

We are only half way through May and yet we have today broken both last years job number total and this years forecast takings target. A New Era Begins

Student Movers woke up to a brand new dawn today as Matthew Welch, the founder, welcomed Christopher Kitchen into a business partnership at the helm of Student Movers.
Many of you will know Chris, he’s been involved in Student Movers since very early on and his hard work has been rewarded with this more permanent position within the highest possible ranks here.

Growth Springs Back to Life

With the start of spring just around the corner, for those who believe it starts on the night of 20/21 March, or indeed, with spring already started, for those who take the Met office approach of the 1st of March. Growth at Student Movers has returned and not before time! This Winter has been a long, hard struggle with negative growth and stagnation hitting Student Movers for the first time in six years. The atmosphere has returned to one of confidence after the March target was met on only the third day of the month. This puts our expansion plans back on track and we are really looking forward to a busy 2011 summer season.

Make or Break Time In 2011

Student Movers sat agonisingly close to success at the end of 2010. Only continued winter growth stood between us and an unstoppable expansion package for 2011. Unfortunately the winter growth has not shown itself, and after December and January both failed to show any real movement in either direction on last years figures, alarm bells began to ring. We are still hopeful to see improvements in the pre-summer season which was a real disappointment last year, with only a handful of jobs across March and April combined. Plans to expand both the workforce and the fleet in time for the summer still stand but are now a little less certain than perhaps we had hoped. We can’t thank our customers enough for their continued support and we hope to see more of you very soon.

Review: Paramore Live At The O2 London.

Yesterday saw our third trip to see Paramore on tour in the UK. The, now, 6 piece band from Franklin, Tennessee in the U.S. have come along way since we first saw them back in February 2008 at The, then, Carling Academy in Brixton, London. For a start the band have grown from a four piece to a six and from a Southern Pop Punk band declaring their willingness to Riot into a well matured Alternative Rock act with a UK number 1 album and now, a multi genre, sold out UK arena tour.

We chose The 02 in London for our 2010 Paramore outing as no-one here had ever been, and let me tell you it did not disappoint! The arena had excellent parking and access from all forms of transport and put our previous venue the M.E.N. to shame when it came to venue design and crowd management. We arrived at 18:30 just as the doors were opened and yet we didn’t experience a single queue and could have been in our seats a couple of minutes later if we had not been distracted by the excellent food available from the fast food venders within the arena section of the 02 dome. £7.50 for a cheeseburger and chips made me have a double take but with very little option when you are starving I paid it and it was very, very, very nice.

The show was opened by warm up act FUN a New York poppy Indie band who despite being very good at what they did kind of left the crowd wondering how we had gone from Kids in Glass Houses, You Me At Six, New Found Glory and other such support acts to what could have been easily described as lame if it were not for a cover of Queen’s Radio Gaga which made everyone sit up and join in with the chorus clapping, and practically saved the set from being a complete wash out.

Next up, B.o.B an American Rap and Hiperty Hoperty artiste! Who looked about as well placed at a rock gig as an Eskimo would, playing crazy golf, on holiday in Devon. The crowd respected that what he did was talented within his own genre and gave ample applause and cheer when each of the more popular songs drowned their final notes. However looking around the seating area where we were sat there were more people looking around in confusion than were standing up even when the hit single Beautiful Girls was played. The loudest cheer of the set was when Hayley Williams of Paramore joined Bobby Ray on stage for a performance of the Number 1 UK single Airplanes. But even this left the crowd slightly empty as their beloved Hayley walked around the stage singing a repetitive lyric to a now tiresome and repetitive melody.

Then it was time for the main event. They say a good book or story has a beginning, middle and end well this set certainly had the makings of a good story from the off. The start was dramatic, clever back lighting tricks and suspense ridden music poured out from behind a semi transparent curtain. The band members silhouettes occasionally appearing to raise the excitement of the crowd. Then the curtain dropped as the recent hit single Ignorance rang out. This led the band into a string of electric tracks new and old which filled the room with energy before they settled down for an emotional rendition of some of the acoustic tracks and some reworked old electric classics rearranged for a more intimate acoustic performance. The band had even dragged out a sofa to sit on during this quieter section so the fans could see them in a relaxed setting. Perhaps sounds a little boring but it really worked and the crowd respectfully sang along with huge affection. They finished the set with another string of their electric classics and a finale of Brick by Boring Brick and Misery Business really finished the night of right.

If we gave stars here at Student Movers it would have to be a million out of 5. Best Paramore show yet, loved it. If anything the lack of attention deflecting support acts made the main event a little more special. Can’t wait till next time.!

Tuition Fees Protest: A Warning From History.

Yesterdays protest in London started well with 50,000 students and lecturers taking to the streets to voice their frustrations against the government’s planned increase in the tuition fee cap. However by the afternoon thousands had been joined by socialists and anarchists outside the Conservative Party Head Quarters at 30 Millbank Tower in the heart of Westminster. The scene soon turned ugly. The police were outnumbered and soon hundreds of protesters had breached the building and were running a riot. 3 police officers were injured and a number of arrests followed. For people old enough to remember this stirs up memories of the poll tax riots. Which, if they have any sense, should worry Tory MP’s.

Incredible Summer Season Winding Down

This summer has been incredible for Student Movers. In the five months of May through to September we moved more people than in the entire 12 months of 2009. We hope everyone has now settled into their homes away from home or indeed their new lives in pastures new. We have certainly enjoyed moving you and look forward to seeing you all again next time you need us. As far as we can tell, the early signs are that we will continue to grow through this winter and hope to expand the business in time to deal with next summer. Hamilton Regains his Championship Lead and Student Movers Prepare for The Storm

Its nearly September again, this marks the arrival of our peak season and this time around will be no exception. Early bookings are up nearly 300% and we are preparing for a storm of work to carry us through to the winter months. Website Reaches Dizzy Heights

The Popularity of our website continues to grow at an extraordinary rate, with visitor numbers now topping 2,500 a month. Lets take June as an example, looking back we can see that in 2007 we had 657 visitors moving slowly to 817 in 2008, then exploding to 1,459 in ‘09 before reaching the stratospheric 2010 level of 2,851. We really can not thank all our customers and business partners enough for helping us reach this level and a debt of gratitude is owed to you all.

How The Election Changes Student Movers

The UK Parliamentary Election 2010 was certainly different, resulting in a coalition government lead by David Cameron’s Conservatives with the help of Nick Cleggs’s Lib Dems. The deals and pleading are over and what matters now is the changes the new government make. Lets take a look at the key points from the agreement that could change the way we do business.

1)” We will examine the balance of the EU’s existing competences and will, in particular, work to limit the application of the Working Time Directive in the United Kingdom.”

This statement is a positive stance as far as Student Movers are concerned as we believe that no good honest business was ever grown from nothing without some days, weeks and years of long and tiring work. If the EU time restraints were introduced to the UK parts of Cornwall and Northern Scotland would become isolated and out of reach of the main transport networks.

2) “protection of jobs by stopping Labour’s proposed jobs tax.”

Could not agree more, here here!
This increase in national insurance contributions would have made growing small business more difficult by far. Not the way to grow out of a recession!

3) “The parties agree that the personal allowance for income tax should be increased in order to help lower and middle income earners.”

No comment required, fabulous idea, just hope the country can really afford it. The coalition government really wants to be known as the start of the future not the final nail in a bankrupt nations coffin.

A serious problem that we can see with the Coalition which affects our business sector is the lack of clear and strong policy on the road network. The Conservatives are strong on rail policy, as were Labour, and from researching the Lib Dem web site you would have to assume they don’t realise there is a transport network, as there are zero policies to be found and zero ideas.

Boss is Back and Married

Today marks the return to full time work of Matthew Welch. fresh from his honeymoon it is now time to take on the summer ahead. The wedding was a fantastic day enjoyed by all and the honeymoon in paradise was very welcome. A huge thanks to everyone who attended the wedding and helped make it a very special day. While the boss was away Student Movers number two Christopher Kitchen stepped up to the task and held the ship on course for two weeks and did a great job. So thanks Chris.

Record Breaking Final Quarter.

The period from January to tax year end in early April is set to be a record breaker here at Student Movers. Continued and sustained growth has been with us since January 2008 and is set to continue well into this new decade. Jobs are up by as much as 450% in February and enquiries are through the roof at increases anywhere between 500% and 1400%.
We’re getting close to 2000 visitors every month to the website and have successfully met our target of growing out into the non-student market, with around 50% of all jobs in the winter season being completed for non-students or post graduates.
We are now just looking forward to helping as many of you as we can in the summer. Good luck with exams and final year papers.

Sick And Tired Of Motorway Road works!

For what seems like a lifetime the M6 between Birmingham and Cumbria has been plastered with pointless and ill conceived 50 mph speed limits. Mile after mile is governed by the snails pace health and safety mumbo jumbo, ooh don’t let the fully grown perfectly responsible workforce (who incidentally choose to work on the roads) get hit by a vehicle traveling faster than 50. Here is the facts of the matter. If a person is struck by a vehicle doing 50 mph they will doubtlessly die from, their injuries at the roadside, in huge amounts of pain, some time between the ambulance being called and the ambulance getting there. On the flip side If someone is hit by any vehicle doing 70 mph they will be killed instantly and suffer no pain. The real issue around road works should be to employ people who are intelligent enough not to walk in front of a moving vehicle on a motorway. I am pretty sure these people already are intelligent enough to not do this but for some reason Mr Health and Mrs Safety have to wrap their children in cotton wool before sending them off to work. People say Britain has lost it’s backbone. I don’t believe that for one second it’s the people in charge who are without spines.

New Van Gets Logo Stickers

As a statement of our intent the new small van will now proudly carry the Student Movers Logo on each side and the rear door. This is the first vehicle to do so since the old van flew the original logo in 2005. The decision was made to remove the old logos from the original small van in 2006 when it was decided they were the only feasible explanation for the number of copycat businesses appearing in the sector. Too much publicity to soon on and we were fearful of being crushed before really getting going. Now four years on we think the time is right to make the brand visible on the vehicle again. The van is tastefully done with just a simple logo on each side and a logo and small web site address on the back doors. We hope this will raise our profile whilst in and around university campuses in the coming year and also get good publicity for the company whilst covering those long motorway miles.

A New Era Begins

Today we took delivery of the new small van. This is a day of mixed emotions. Despite it being a milestone for the business to purchase a new van it is also a sad moment to have to replace the old one. The van is almost identical to the old one but customers who were familiar with the old van should remember to look out for a silver van now not a red one. Yes, the new van is a new colour! In fact it is the final piece in an image change puzzle which started way back in March ‘08. We have had a black and silver colour scheme since ‘08 but the red van pre dated even that and was part of the original red, yellow and white colour scheme the company launched with in 2005. Our next step is to design the stickers for the van and give her a name. A Fond Farewell

Today saw the original Student Movers van complete it’s final move. Up hill and down dale the little 2004 Fiat Doblo Cargo van refused to show any great signs of her age, but, on this, her 150,000 mile birthday it really is time to let her go. It seemed extremely fitting that her final job was more of an arctic expedition than a light removals contract. She moved a consignment of suitcases from Nottingham to Dundee on what has to be one of the whitest days in living memory. There was no single area along the seemingly never ending route without snow and for the most part the motorway gave way to one or maybe two lanes of solid snow. In all honesty it would have been detrimental to the occasion if the weather had not provided the excitement it did and we are glad it was a day that won’t be easy to forget.

So please raise your glasses and say together the Doblo toast...

“Here’s to an old friend, and long may she live, whether it be as a decorator’s van or gardener’s mower-tower, may she continue to plow through the miles and reach every destination with ease. We will remember her. Good bye Doblo and god speed... To the Doblo! ”

Second Annual Paramore Outing

Student Movers Staff and friends traveled to The Manchester Evening News Arena (M.E.N.) last night to witness the largest show the American pop/punk act have ever played. According to a source over 15,000 people were there to see Hayley, Josh, Zac, Jeremy and Taylor rock the place to it’s very foundations.

Last year our Paramore trip was to Brixton in London, a much smaller venue. On that occasion the band were amazing, this year words can not describe what happened. The band were as tight as can be and Hayley’s vocals were incredible. The set list was a satisfying blend of old and new with some interesting tweaks to the vocals and arrangement of the older tracks.

There was a lot of people there because of the success of the Twilight film, for which Paramore did two songs for the soundtrack and when ‘Decode’ the official Twilight soundtrack started towards the end of the night the place went bananas! Obviously for seasoned supporters like ourselves the Twilight tracks are more of a side event which happened between ‘RIOT’ and ‘Brand New Eyes’ but it does not matter how the arena was filled, it matters that it was full and an amazing night was had by all. Bring on next year!!!

2009 Was a Record Breaker, Even With a Recession.

After reviewing data from 2009 and then comparing that data with previous years it seems that despite being affected by recession Student Movers have enjoyed a substantial workload growth of over 106% this year when compared to 2008. The precise facts are that this year we

have completed 2.07 times the volume of work completed in 2008 and we have seen a leap of 117% in enquiries over the same period. This is all very positive and is adding to the feeling of achievement here at Student Movers. It is hard to imagine what might happen next year but early predictions are looking both: exciting and full of promise. Recession Drawing to an End?

Student Movers are having what can only be described as a miracle month. Since we started out in 2005 we have never experienced a good December, in fact December had become slang for ‘month off’ but this year for the first time ever we are taking in bookings at the same rate as other months.

So now we must ask ourselves:

“is this a sign that the recession is finally lifting it’s strangle hold over the small move market”?

Perhaps we could dare to say yes! the recession began at such a time when Student Movers was still in nappies and breast feeding in relative business age terms and it has been practically impossible to tell whether growth has been affected by the slow down or not. So now we find ourselves in the closing stages of 2009 and it looks like we have broken through to the recovery side of the dip. We have to admit it may be becoming clear that we had been effected in quite a large way without noticing it.
This was more luck than judgment, if recession had hit two years later we may have lost huge amounts and two years earlier and we may not have got off the ground!

50,000 website visits since creation.

Today we calculated total website visitor numbers from website creation in 2006 up to the present day and we found that we are standing at an unbelievable 48,996. This may seem like a small number compared to some websites but here at Student Movers we are very proud of reaching 50,000 people in just over three years. We would like to thank every single visitor individually but obviously this is not possible so here is a collective thanks and here’s to many more visitors yet to come.

Student Movers Standing Strong Through Economic Crisis

Since the economic crisis began I have been worried about the prospects for continued growth in our 5th tax year. However I have just completed analysing data from tax year 08/09 and I am pleased with the progress made. I was perhaps hoping for more year on year growth in the period between October and April but never the less there was still growth just fractionally below predictions made before the recession. Based on the findings from 08/09 I’m very confident that Student Movers will be well placed to weather the storm of recession well and live to fight another day. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to your support, without the loyal support from established customers I’m sure we would not be in the position we find our selves in today.

Fast Quote Online System Launched

Today a new online quote system was launched. The idea is to give the customer the ability to get a good rough estimate of cost before ever needing to send an email or pick up a telephone. At this stage the system is limited in size with only routes between nine major cities covered. However in time the system may grow to cover more cities. For now customers who wish to travel along routes not covered by the system will have to continue to do things the old fashioned way as described on our ‘get a quote’ web page. I.e. ring or email. Here's hoping everyone who uses the new system finds it useful and helps them to choose Student Movers for their move.

Prices Lowered Inline With Fuel Costs

From today Student Movers customers are set to benefit from a 5% reduction in all prices. We hope this will help all our customers in 2009 as we all take to our hypothetical fallout bunkers and wait for the recession to pass. On the stroke of midnight Matthew Welch got down on one knee and asked his girlfriend and long term friend Rebecca to marry him. The question was asked in front of a roaring fire in Cumbria and luckily the answer was yes. Wedding plans are already well underway and 2010 looks to be the probable year for a wedding.

The Calm After The Storm

Things have been manic to say the very least here over the last few months. We’ve had records being set and broken left, right and centre. First to fall was record monthly profits in August, but then along came September which was a historic month for Student Movers. In September we did not just trade with record profits, but record numbers of jobs, highest website hits in a month, highest mileage in a month and the van managed to burst through 100,000 miles with ease.

New Student Movers Uniform Arrives

The long awaited work uniform for Student Movers was introduced this afternoon. The Uniform has been long coming, ever since the new ‘Silver and Black’ image was introduced back in March 2008. The new clothing consists of polo shirts, fleeces and heavy duty Regatta™ waterproof coats. The look is consistent with the new image with all garments in black and a silver logo proudly positioned on the right breast of each. This almost completes the image overhaul that Student Movers has gone through to prepare it’s self for the future. We can only see Student Movers having a future as one of the UK’s leading small load removals contractors and we thank all our customers for their continued support and wish you all well.

Student Movers Boss’ Sister Gets Married

Yesterday on the 12th July 2008 my Sister Joanna married her long term boyfriend Nick. The day was a meteorological miracle as the rain that was forecast never came. For long periods Nantwich was in fact a wash with sunshine. Throughout the day anybody inspecting the skies to the north could see dark clouds of all shades and sizes, but to everyone's amazement it seemed as they approached South Cheshire they somehow parted and traveled around us. The service went without many hitches and the evening and daytime receptions were both roaring successes. Although I don’t think either will read this article I wish them all the success and happiness possible in their new lives as husband and wife.

Student Movers Feeling The Effects of The Fuel Price Increase

As fuel prices escalate to new heights all sectors of the transportation industry are having to re-calculate pricing and wages. Here at Student Movers we have had no choice but to increase prices to sustain profitability. This has led to our third year in business being are most difficult. Today Student Movers boss Matthew Welch has said “Although in the past two months I have received more interest from potential customers than in any other two month period since I began trading in 2005, the rate at which I convert quotes into paying jobs has dropped to it’s lowest ever level.”

Student Movers have been forced to increase prices across the board by up to 40% and this is as a direct result of increasing fuel costs. In 2005 it cost Student Movers £54 to fill the tank of our Fiat Doblo van, now in 2008 it costs nearly £80. That's nearly a yearly increase of £1000 in fuel costs alone.

Today we learnt that road tax for our vehicle could rise by; up to, or over £100 per year. This is because it is classed as a high emissions vehicle. This seems a little unfair considering we have a driving policy in place which ensures our emissions levels remain as low as possible at all times. In fact the way our van is driven ensures our emissions are lower than some of the vehicles which will see their tax lowered for being so called lower emissions vehicles.

We think it may be time the government gave up its ten year war on the motorist and realised that the quantity of drivers on the road is a problem that could be rectified by introducing more challenging examinations and this alone would reduce the overall effect of the nation on the environment and reduce the amount of collisions on the roads.

Just finally we want to say that everyone involved in Student Movers wishes to express our support for all the protests and strike actions within the transport industry relating to the fuel prices and we intend to send our van to the next local protest.

As the summer months continue to bring the UK reasonably fine weather most people who run a diesel powered vehicle will notice an increase in fuel efficiency and this is no different here at Student Movers. As you will see from our 64 mph motorway driving policy, we take our role in solving the global climate issue very seriously. Although we may only be a small company we hope that by our continued efforts to reduce our emissions other larger companies who operate small vans may take a similar measure to reduce their emissions.
In 2005 when we had no environmentally friendly policy our average fuel consumption was around 48 mpg. Today, with our new motorway driving policy and this fine summer weather, our average is up to 65 mpg.

Historic By-Election Result.

At around 02:30 am all the votes had been counted and the results were announced. The polls had all put the government and the Conservatives neck and neck, many feared a re-count would be needed. However even as counting was still underway, news of a huge majority was filtering through to the press. Tory faces in Nantwich Civic Hall looked cheerful in a way not seen for many years, the mood in the Labour camp seemed quite the opposite. The Returning Officer took to the stage alongside the candidates and began to announce the results. Of the major parties Labour’s result was read first and at just over 12,000 in an overall turnout of 58,000 it seemed History was in the making, Then when Edward Timpson’s 20,500 Conservative vote was read out we had a new MP and a Conservative MP for the first time in the History of this constituency. The Labour majority coming into this election was 7,200 and the Conservative majority now is 7,800 that’s a huge swing of 19.6%. It seems the political landscape of this country is changing. If this result was to reflect the views of the entire nation, if we went to general election today the house of commons would contain 497 Tory seats, just 100 Labour and 25 Lib Dem. Here at Student Movers there is a sense of new optimism towards the Conservative Party. We’re hoping that a new Government elected in two years time could stop spiraling fuel prices and bring our removals job costs back under control. Congratulations to Edward Timpson and hard luck to all the other candidates. A quick message to the Labour camp, who last night were focused on the point that they had worked hard but most importantly had great fun in their campaign to start a class war in this by-election, is “perhaps taking the politics and the interests of this country more seriously might have been better received by both the voters and the media.” Another message would be...”The country is now sick and tired of hearing what the past Conservative government did wrong every time a member of the Labour party speaks, that's along time ago now in fact people approaching a voting age today are not even old enough to remember the last Tory government.”

Home Town Gripped by By-Election

Crewe and Nantwich based Student Movers are right in the middle of the biggest by-election that the current Labour government have faced. Crewe and Nantwich has been under Labour control since the War and was represented by Gwyneth Dunwoody for something in the region of 36 years. The By-Election is being held due to the sad death of Gwyneth, who had been a great; MP and representative of the people of Crewe and Nantwich. The National press is in town to watch the final campaign efforts and to cover the results later tonight. Student Movers are hoping Gordon Brown is sent a strong message by the people here.

New Return Ticket Offer Introduced

Student Movers today unveiled plans for a new money saving offer. Students will now be able to purchase a RETURN TICKET from Student Mover. This will entitle each customer to use our removals services at the end of a term and then again at the start of the next, for a reduced fee. The Offer will be available from the 30th May 2008 and tickets will be valid for 12 months from the date of first use. Unused tickets will qualify for a 35% refund on the total price for a further six months after the ‘valid to’ date expires.

Big Promotional Tour Plans Unveiled

Today, deep in the heart of rural South Cheshire, Student Movers boss, Matthew Welch, unveiled his plans to take a promotional tour on the road. The Tour, set to combine live music with corporate publicity, is planned for the winter of 2009/ 2010. However nothing is set in stone yet. Mr Welch said, “the tour will not only help to promote the removals business but it will help young bands take a big leap towards stardom”. He hopes that bands selected to appear on the three band tour of University student union bars will be spotted by labels or promoters and taken on to bigger and better things thanks to Student Movers. With bands already in the pipeline and a similar Christian Rock tour planned you can be sure you’ll be hearing a lot more from the Student Movers brand in the future.
